Mullein: Support your Lungs & Spine

July Ingredient Highlight – Old City Apothecary
Mullein, an unassuming, sturdy plant with big benefits. Whether you've seen it in my TikTok videos or spotted it growing in ditches along the road, mullein is one of those herbs that does it all. From supporting respiratory health to helping with spine discomfort and even offering emotional support during tough times, mullein is a true herbal powerhouse.
The Benefits of Mullein
Mullein has been used for centuries, and its reputation as a versatile herb is well-earned. Here’s how it can support your health:
Respiratory Health
Mullein is a powerhouse for respiratory support, especially for those dealing with smoker’s lung or chronic respiratory issues. It’s a demulcent, meaning it soothes and protects irritated mucous membranes, making it ideal for easing coughs, sore throats, and general respiratory discomfort. Mullein works by coating the throat and airways, reducing inflammation and irritation in the process.
Beyond tea or tincture, mullein is also traditionally used by those with smoker’s lungs. The dried leaves of mullein can be smoked, which is believed to help cleanse the lungs and ease the lingering effects of smoking. While this might sound surprising, mullein is gentle and non-toxic, making it a safe option for those looking to support their lungs. Just be mindful and use this practice with care.
Whether you choose to brew it into tea, take it as a tincture, or even smoke the leaves, mullein is a natural, soothing remedy for respiratory relief.

Spine Health
Did you know mullein also supports spine health? Its anti-inflammatory properties make it great for soothing the muscles and tissues surrounding your spine, providing relief from discomfort or stiffness. Whether you're dealing with a nagging ache or just need some extra support, mullein can be a gentle ally in promoting spinal well-being.
Emotional Healing
Mullein isn’t just great for your body—it’s also a wonderful emotional healer. In times of grief, stress, or loss, mullein can provide grounding and comfort. Its strong, upright growth is symbolic of resilience, offering a reminder that healing takes time, but it’s possible. I truly believe that God has given us plants like mullein to help us heal not just physically, but emotionally as well.
Ear Health
Another benefit of mullein flowers is their ability to support ear health. Mullein flowers are often used in oil infusions for ear infections or discomfort. This remedy has been used for centuries to alleviate ear pain and infections, making it a natural go-to for those suffering from ear issues.

How to Use Mullein for Healing
Respiratory Health:
Brew a cup of mullein tea by steeping 1-2 teaspoons of dried mullein leaves in hot water for 5-10 minutes. If you’re looking for something quicker, try our mullein tincture—take 20-30 drops in a bit of water, 2-3 times a day.
Spine Health: For spine support, sip mullein tea regularly to help keep inflammation in check. You can also take the tincture for a more potent effect if you're experiencing persistent discomfort.
Emotional Healing: During times of emotional upheaval, incorporate mullein into your daily routine. The calming and grounding effects of mullein can help you center yourself, whether you’re drinking the tea or using the tincture. It's a great way to support your heart as you navigate life's challenges.
Ear Health: To support ear health, infuse mullein flowers in olive oil and apply a few drops into the ear canal for relief. This method has been used for centuries to alleviate pain and discomfort from ear infections.
Harvesting Mullein
Mullein is a biennial plant, which means it takes two years to complete its lifecycle. The first year is spent growing a rosette of large, soft leaves close to the ground, while the second year sees the plant send up its tall flower spike. Mullein is often seen growing in ditches along the road, in fields, or even in your backyard. Look for the tall, velvety leaves and the impressive spikes of yellow flowers that bloom in late summer. Harvest the leaves when they’re large, soft, and velvety. The flowers can be used as well—making mullein a versatile herb for both its leaves and blossoms. When harvesting, be gentle with the plant to preserve its growth for the following season.
